Regulate then Educate: Trust and Safety via the Universal Protocol
Thursday July 16, 2026 10:30am - 12:00pm HST
Ravae and Nicole say go to this one! Offers an introduction to the foundational practices of the Universal Protocol, a compassionate framework designed to create learning environments where all students (and adults!) can feel safe, regulated, and ready to learn. Grounded in the principles of Practical Functional Assessment (PFA) and Skill-Based Treatment (SBT), this session explores how proactive, relationship-centered strategies can strengthen classroom culture, reduce escalation, and support meaningful engagement. Participants will leave with a practical plan to foster trust, safety, dignity, and collaboration while building classroom systems that prioritize connection before correction.

Note: this session builds with a follow up in the block after lunch!

PFA, SBT and why we C.A.R.E

This workshop introduces the foundations of Practical Functional Assessment (PFA) and Skill-Based Treatment (SBT) as compassionate, evidence-based approaches to understanding and supporting complex behavior. This session provides an overview of how PFA and SBT can foster safer, more joy filled learning environments by prioritizing communication, regulation, and meaningful skill development. Participants will also explore the integration of the PEAK Relational Training System and AIM (Accept, Identify, Move) framework, and learn how these tools are being applied through the Hawaiʻi Department of Education’s C.A.R.E. (Compassionate Approach to Relational Education) Project to strengthen student outcomes, educator capacity, and school-wide systems of support. This session highlights the power of connection, collaboration, and compassionate practices to bring more joy into teaching and learning.

This session builds on the morning block "Regulate Then Educate"  - Let's dive deep my people!
